Picking a First Dance Song…

So, it’s time to pick out a song for the couple’s first dance. There is so much from which to choose. Just how do you decide?

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on a song for your first dance.

Does the song have some significance?

The song, or its artist, may have some special connection to you as a couple. Occasionally, a couple will play the first song they danced to for their first dance as a married couple. The song may have been a part of a movie soundtrack that recalls one of their first dates. The song could evoke some special memory or connection.

Don’t forget to examine the lyrics of the song .

There may be a song that evokes a good memory, but its lyrics make it totally inappropriate as a song choice.

My daughter and I love the song Purple Rain, as song by Prince. For us, it evokes memories of drives to the beach with the family and the car radio blasting. Although the song has great memories connected to it, I would neveruse it for a father-daughter dance because of the lyrics!

The song should be something that can be danced to.

What style of dance would you want your first dance to be? What songs are most suited to this style of dance? Miley Cyrus is remembered for “twerking” at the VMA Awards, but would a “twerky” dance really be a good choice for a married couple’s first dance?

If this is planned for long enough in advance, you may even consider dance lessons. It would be a great opportunity to learn this together.

Consider the quality of the song.

Classic songs never go out of style.

Certain artists never go out of style.

No offense intended to anyone, but do you really want to look back on your pictures and see yourself in a mullet haircut dancing to Billy Ray Cyrus?

Consider the different versions of favorite songs.

Some of the more timeless songs have been recorded by many artists. Sometimes the same artist has recorded different versions of the same song.

For example, at my wedding reception my wife and I danced to “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” sung by Elvis Presley. Elvis did several versions of this song. There is the concert version, he had gotten into the habit of ending his concerts with this song. There is the version that was done in the recording studio. However, my favorite version of this song is the one he sang the movie Blue Hawaii. I love the sweet, romantic quality of this version which makes it a perfect choice.

What about you?

What factors do you think are important to consider when selecting a first dance song?

  1. It took my husband and I forever to pick a first dance song as we both like very different types of music. The few songs/artists we both like seemed inappropriate for a first dance! We were listening to a bunch of music on mix when ‘Kiss Me’ by Six pence none the richer came on and we both went ‘that’s it!’. A song we both really liked and with lyrics reminiscent of our engagement. It took about 8 months though!

    • Great song choice!

I’m glad you were able to find a song meaningful to both of you.

      Thanks for commenting!
